We said goodbye to Toledo today at their lovely train station and made it to Madrid, the last stop on our epic adventure. We, of course, found the Camino de Madrid and walked a little of it and got our final pilgrim stamp at Iglesia de Santiago. Most people stop getting their credentials stamped in Santiago de Compostela so it was fun to find all these other Camino routes. This one was even marked with a tile on the church. We visited the Madrid cathedral which was interesting because it looked so much more modern and colorful. Anthony looked it up and found that construction was begun in 1883 and finished in 1993. No wonder it looked so different- it’s just a baby cathedral. Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world (per Guinness Book of World Records) is right around the corner from our Airbnb so we had a delicious lunch there. They have been known for their roasted suckling pigs since the 1700’s. We walked to Plaza Mayor. Seems like every city in Spain has one. This one seemed very touristy. Also went to the Mercado de San Miguel and partook of some delicious food. Anthony was in heaven over the olives.. There is a lot to see (and eat) in Madrid so we have our work cut out for us in the next couple of days.
